Yard work? Thanks, I’ll pass.

It’s all messy.  The yard. The hair.  The kids.  Life.  All on big glorious mess!

We all know there are different types of people in the world, but did you know that applies to housing as well?

I have come to the conclusion that there are HOUSE people and that there are CONDO/APARTMENT people.

Those of us who grow up away from a large metropolitan area may not realize this until it is too late.  We are fed the image of happy families frolicking in lush backyards with immaculate landscaping.  We are told this is the dream, and that we should all aspire towards it.

When I was young, apartment living was not really an option in the town that I lived in.  Condos were definitely not a thing around the area.

Much has changed in the past 20 years, and these are now options.

It is too late for me, but others, please, save yourselves.

There are people out in the world, who work a 40 hour week, and then relax by working outside.  These are HOUSE people.  They mow, weed, trim, prune, cultivate and more to relax.  I am not one of these people.

I have tried to be one of these people.  Every spring, when the flowers are on sale, and beauty is all around, I think to myself, “I could do that.”  I understand how gardening works.  I am completely capable.

The thing is, I don’t WANT to do it.  I just don’t.

I want to come home from work, walk inside, and not think about it.

The sun hurts me.

The heat makes me sick.

My back randomly goes out.

I am a procrastinator.

Please understand, I fully appreciate a freshly mown lawn.  I live in a neighborhood of neatly manicured lawns.  Except for that one.  That house on the corner.  My house.

The grass is never mowed quite frequently enough.  The trimming is done maybe twice a summer.  The driveway is not shoveled in the winter.

I have discovered I am a CONDO person.  If it were not for my kids and dogs, I would have absolutely no need for a yard.  I would like to go to work, come home, and have these tasks magically performed for me.

This is particularly bothersome to my neighbors as we live in a community with large yards.  I have a friend who lives in a large home on a small lot in a large city.  Several years ago, they removed all the grass from their backyard and replaced it with astroturf.  Her yard is the perfect size for this, and I am very envious.

On the weekends, I do not want to spend my off time working.  I want to spend it reading, writing, cooking, watching movies, relaxing.

I am quickly approaching the place in life where I will be able to contract it out.  This thought brings me so much joy, I cannot explain it.

The current plan is to remain in our home until the youngest child graduates from high school.  At that time, we may be relocating.  Depending on the dog situation at the time, he will be hard-pressed to talk me into another house with a giant yard.  Maybe I will be able to manage a terrace plant or something, as long as it isn’t too needy.

  1. You are hitting the part of life where the nest will soon be empty and it’s going to be time to re-evaluate stuff and things and why is there so many bedrooms? It becomes time for cleaning of closets, trips to goodwill and maybe you sell the house and move to one that fits your new life. If you are looking around and see work you just don’t want to do, why are you holding on to it? Home is your sanctuary. Fly.

  2. Great post! I feel your pain. I hate yard work with a passion, but I find myself having to do it for several hours every weekend. It’s like I’m being punished for some sin I committed … like allowing myself to be talked into buying a house. What a rip-off!

    Thanks for the smile! 🙂
